Reading Gustav Schwab’s Greek Myths totally blew me away. His storytelling is both sophisticated and next-level — honestly, I wish I had this book when I was growing up. It’s like a breath of fresh air, giving new life to a bunch of Greek myths I thought I already knew. Schwab’s poetic, lively style makes these ancient stories pop with imagination, excitement, drama, and all the juicy details.
This isn’t just another retelling — it’s a beautifully curated collection of 47 legendary tales. From Pandora’s box and Perseus’s adventures to Jason and the Argonauts, Theseus and the Minotaur, and Homer’s Odyssey, each story is brought to life in a way that feels both timeless and genuinely awesome.

Another great thing about this book by Gustav Schwab is that it ventures into lesser-known territory, like the tragic saga of Niobe, uncovering hidden gems that add fresh depth to the classics. Schwab’s storytelling is utterly mesmerizing — each tale is crafted with beauty and clarity, inviting you to get lost in the myths.
Review of GREEK MYTHS by Gustav Schwab: Exploring Classic Greek Legends
Gustav Schwab (1792–1850) was a German writer who really knew his Greek mythology. You can see his passion and deep understanding in every page, making this collection a must-have for Greek myth fans. What makes this book even more special, though, are the stunning illustrations that beautifully complement the stories and bring the myths to life.

Honestly, I’ve never come across a Greek mythology book with so many beautiful, dream-like illustrations that really capture the magic and drama of the Greek myths. They add a whole extra layer of wonder and make the tales even more immersive.
Plus, there’s an extensive glossary at the end that introduces you to the key heroes, gods, and legends of ancient Greece — making this book perfect for both mythology enthusiasts and newcomers.
But what truly makes this book special is the storytelling itself, like the epic tale of Jason and the Argonauts, where the magic really comes alive.

If you love epic stories filled with heroism, tragedy, and timeless drama, this lavishly illustrated edition of Greek myths is a must-have. It’s a vibrant revival of the gods and heroes, bringing them to life like never before.

Gustav Schwab’s collection of Greek myths and legends from antiquity, Sagen des klassischen Altertums (translated as Gods and Heroes: Myths and Epics of Ancient Greece), was published between 1838 and 1840.
It was widely embraced in German schools and played a significant role in shaping how classical antiquity was received and taught in German classrooms. This influential work became a foundational resource for many fortunate students.

Greek Myth by Gustav Schwab features stories adapted from Sagen des klassischen Altertums, brought to life with stunning illustrations by 29 artists. Among these are some well-known names from that era, such as Walter Crane, Arthur Rackham, William Russell Flint, and Virginia Frances Sterrett. Additionally, the talented illustrator Clifford Harper contributed some beautiful visuals specifically for this volume. Here’s a beautiful image showing the Judgement of Paris.

Overall, Gustav Schwab’s Greek Myths is nearly impossible to fault. It’s a genuine masterpiece, and any minor criticisms would be just nitpicking. I truly love this book, and I believe you’ll feel the same way.

One small thing I’ll point out — the hardback cover of Gustav Schwab’s Greek Myths, like the one you see here, looks pretty unimpressive, if I’m honest, and doesn’t do justice to the incredible stories and stunning illustrations inside. It’s almost as if they wanted to keep the book’s true awesomeness hidden away! Maybe it’s a classic collection too good to be flaunted openly, or maybe it’s just for those in the know — like you have to be of German descent or something. Who can say?
Even with this minor flaw, I’m giving Gustav Schwab’s Greek Myths an outstanding 9.5 out of 10. It’s a true masterpiece — a must-have for anyone passionate about Greek mythology, heroic legends, and Greek tragedy all wrapped into one. Trust me, this book is an incredible feast for the imagination, even if the cover tries to hide just how extraordinary it really is.
Seriously, this is truly one of the best Greek mythology books you could ever come across.
