Sea of Dreams: Graphic Novel Review
The “Sea of Dreams” story kicks off at this cool Ice & Snow Arts Festival, where things get a little heated. You’ll find people chatting about art, and when artist Yan Dong steps into the spotlight, some folks start calling him out for being a bit too showy. It sparks an intriguing debate about what really qualifies as art and what gives it its magic.

The vibe at the arts festival shifts gear when suddenly, a deep BMMMM vibrates through the air. From above, it looks like a meteor is on a crash course for Earth, sending everyone into a frenzy! People are freaking out, ready to run for cover when, out of nowhere, this fiery ball just freezes in place — suspending mid-air like it’s defying the laws of physics!
But wait, what’s this! This icy sphere, glowing and shimmering, starts to talk. Our guy Mr. Dong can hardly believe his ears as it introduces itself as a Low-Temperature Artist. How cool is that? An otherworldly being, right in the middle of the festival! Definitely not what anyone was expecting!

Yan Dong stands in stunned silence, captivated by every word of the intergalactic artist, who is no ordinary creator. The intergalactic artist holds a profound belief that only art truly matters. As it examines one of the works at the Ice & Snow Arts Festival, its expression contorts in disbelief. With a touch of anger, it proclaims, “How dare you call this a work of art?”
The weight of its contempt lingers in the air, prompting Dong and readers alike to reconsider what it truly means to create.

After making its presence felt, there’s a palpable desire among the onlookers for it to vanish back into space and return to the galaxy from which it came. Yet, the alien artist, undeterred by their sentiments, has a different vision and makes its way toward the ocean.

The extraterrestrial artist draws the ocean’s waters into its cosmic grasp, evoking a sense of anticipation as if a breathtaking masterpiece is poised to unfold before our eyes.

The arrival of the alien artist swiftly ignites a whirlwind of concern, prompting a quick response from the Chinese government to address the burgeoning crisis. Intelligence indicates that this celestial creator hails from beyond the Milky Way galaxy, igniting both intrigue and anxiety among officials and citizens alike. As art intertwines with the unknown, the stakes escalate, inviting an exploration not only of the intergalactic artist’s intentions but also of the greater mysteries of the universe itself.

The extraterrestrial artist, having thus far refrained from direct attacks, has evoked a mix of curiosity, fear, and caution among officials and military leaders. In light of this unprecedented encounter, they have resolved to proceed with caution.
To uncover the artist’s true intentions, Mr. Dong has been enlisted to establish communication, aiming to bridge the gap between worlds and shed light on the mysteries surrounding its plans and motives.

As we dive deeper into the mesmerizing “Sea of Dreams” graphic novel, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment — like a ship anchored in a surreal harbor! Here, Mr. Dong interacts with the enigmatic Low-Temperature Artist, posing questions you would also wish to ask that crack open the very essence of creativity and existence.

Here we are at page 24 in this extraordinary 88-page graphic novel. The journey ahead remains vast and enigmatic, and the intergalactic adventure is merely beginning…
SEA OF DREAMS: CIXIN LIU & HEAD OF ZEUS
Liu Cixin (Chinese: 刘慈欣), born June 23, 1963, is a Chinese computer engineer and a science fiction superstar. This guy has snagged the prestigious Galaxy Award a whopping nine times and claimed the 2015 Hugo Award for his mind-bending novel The Three-Body Problem, along with the 2017 Locus Award for Death’s End. He’s also taken home the Chinese Nebula Award. When his works are translated into English, you’ll see his name as Cixin Liu. He’s a big player in the literary scene, serving as a member of the China Science Writers Association and the vice president of the Shanxi Writers Association. And among his fellow sci-fi scribes in China, he’s affectionately known as “Da Liu” (“Big Liu”).
“Sea of Dreams” made its debut in the UK back in 2021 thanks to Head of Zeus. I like to keep a little mystery about whether there are any links to Greek gods or Greek mythology in the story. But one thing’s for sure — the name Zeus always casts a powerful shadow! And you can’t forget about Poseidon — after all, he’s the god of the sea, so he’s got to have some kind of connection too!
So, is it worth diving into the Sea of Dreams? Let me answer with an emphatic YES! The graphic novel, Sea of Dreams, is a gateway to a very unique otherworldly experience, one that will linger in your mind long after you’ve closed its cover.
What is art and what defines its worth? This profound question resonates throughout “Sea of Dreams,” with answers as surprising as the amazing story itself. Immerse yourself in the dreamscape, and let the adventure wash over you!
I would rate Sea of Dreams an impressive 8 out of 10.

Honestly, someone really needs to create a Sea of Dreams movie! Just to clarify, this isn’t your typical children’s graphic novel — it’s definitely better suited for more mature readers aged 14 and up. It’s an excellent choice for anyone with a strong interest in art!
In my view, another graphic novel that closely aligns with SEA OF DREAMS is THE LABYRINTH by Buzzelli. This is another remarkable work that deserves to be explored for its unique depth and superb storyline.
