PANTHEON: Book Review

Pantheon An Illustrated Handbook to the Greek Gods and Goddesses Book by Caroline Lawrence

Pantheon: An Illustrated Handbook to the Greek Gods & Goddesses by Caroline Lawrence was apparently inspired by the Broadway musical Hadestown. Interestingly, some audience reviewers didn’t seem to know much about the Greek gods — for example, confusing Hades with the devil. So, yeah, this book has definitely piqued my curiosity and made me want to see Hadestown for myself! Let’s see what else this Pantheon book review can do.

The 208-page book, first published in 2024, is a really cool introduction to the Greek gods and goddesses (aka the Olympian Gods). The layout is smart — with text strategically placed in key spots on the page, making it super easy to find the information you’re interested in. Plus, you’ll likely learn some new and interesting facts about these mythic powers that you didn’t know before.

Greek gods and goddesses are rich, complex characters with fascinating stories, and this book does a fantastic job of breaking them down and making them more accessible. The first section focuses on 14 Olympians, beginning with a one-page illustration for each god or goddess, followed by five pages packed with intriguing details. The lineup includes Zeus, Hera, Hephaestus, Athena, Aphrodite, Poseidon — you get the idea.

The second half explores other ancient deities and powers within the Greek mythology universe, including a variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters. It’s a book packed with fascinating facts about Greek mythology and offers a really well-rounded overview of everything you need to know.

Pantheon Review & Rating

Honestly, Pantheon is a pretty informative read that gets the point across well. However, the illustrations aren’t really my style (that’s just personal taste), but I still picked up a few new things. Definitely worth a look. The main thing it left me thinking about is whether I’ll ever get to see Hadestown live — it sounds amazing! I loved watching the BBC musical Orpheus in the Underworld on DVD — such a classic.

Pantheon Caroline Lawrence Back Cover Book Summary

I’d give PANTHEON: An Illustrated Handbook to the Greek Gods & Goddesses a 7 out of 10. I definitely enjoyed picking up a few new tidbits here and there, but honestly, the illustrations didn’t quite match the vibe of the book.

Pantheon feels like it’s aimed at a slightly more mature audience — not really a kids’ book, in my opinion. It seems best suited for young adults or older readers who don’t know much about the Olympian gods, heroes, monsters, and all that other amazing Greek mythology stuff.

Honestly, I think the book would’ve been way better if it featured authentic images of Greek gods and goddesses — like real paintings, sculptures, and artwork you’d find in museums and galleries. That’s definitely one of my main gripes. However, I really liked the look of the front cover. That said, I never would have guessed that she’s supposed to be Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

On a brighter note, I did walk away a slightly wiser after getting my hands on this book. There were a few moments where I wondered if some of the information was entirely accurate, but honestly, who really cares? Overall, I’m still giving Pantheon the thumbs up.
