The 10 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time

Best-Sci-Fi-Movies

The 50 Sci-Fi movies shown here are brilliant, make no mistake about it. From these fifty great sci-fi movies I narrow things down to determine the 10 best science fiction movies ever made.

How did I do this? I’ve chosen 10 science fiction themes and under each theme I’ve placed what I consider to be the 5 best Sci-Fi movies, with the number 1 movie being the best. This is of course all based on my opinion and what I’ve seen.

The result leaves ten of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time. All of these movies are masterpieces of the science fiction genre in any case. I can’t see how these very entertaining movies can ever be surpassed. These 10 sci-fi movies are classics and everyone should see them at some point.

Urania, the Muse of Astronomy (stars), has done a great job to inspire some of these awesome Sci-Fi movies. Thanks Urania, for giving Science Fiction Film Fans something to really think about. The Greek Gods were way ahead of their time.

A Clockwork Orange, was a movie I couldn’t watch until I was a mature adult because I found it very disturbing. The milk bar scene in the beginning of the movie was weird enough, but I couldn’t take it when the old man was beaten with the cain. It terrified the hell out of me. Who were those weirdos? I couldn’t comprehend what was going on.

5. Blade Runner (1982)

Exploring other Worlds

1. Total Recall (1990)

2. The Black Hole (1979)

Older Sci-Fi Classics

1. Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1959)

Journey to the Centre of the World, intrigued me the most from my own childhood. It was one of my all-time favourite movies when growing up. This brilliant movie has a few scenes totally ingrained in my mind after having seen it countless times. The extraordinary adventure still holds up today as a great adventure Sci-Fi movie. It starts out a bit slow, but just like The Wizard of Oz, it soon turns very interesting. The whirlpool in the ocean and the final red hot explosive scenes were incredible. There’s even mention of Atlantis in the movie. It really does blow most modern Sci-Fi movies away.

2. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

3. Planet of the Apes (1968)

It took me quite a while to fully appreciate the ending of the movie, Planet of the Apes, after seeing it as a young kid, but it blew my mind when I finally understood what had truly happened in the end.

4. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

5. Forbidden Planet (1956)

Scary Science Fiction Movies

1. The Fly (1986)

This movie can get pretty disturbing, so much so, that you’ll probably never want to see it again. It will stay with you forever though. When I watched this movie again years and years later for the second time, it was even better. This movie just knocked off Predator (1987) even though I’ve seen Predator many more times. You can’t beat watching The Fly at least once in your life at the right time.

2. Predator (1987)

3. Aliens (1986)

4. The Thing (1982)

5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Computers

1. WarGames (1983)

2. Electric Dreams (1984) – This movie has one of the catchiest movie tunes of all time.

3. Weird Science (1985)

4. Tron (1982)

5. The Zero Theorem (2013)

Run for your Life

1. Battle Royale (2000)

Battle Royale was even more petrifying as a teenager. Could this be happening somewhere? I was only able to watch a few minutes of this movie before having to change channels.

2. The Island (2005)

3. Logan’s Run (1976)

4. Divergent (2014)

5. THX 1138 (1971)

Amazingly, Arnold Schwarzenegger has starred in two of the best 10 sci-fi movies shown here. Who would’ve thought it possible after he initiated his film career in America with the very amateurish movie, Hercules in New York. The Greek Gods however work in mysterious ways. The Muse of Astronomy has obviously showed him great favour since then.
