The typical Greek myth unfolds more like this. In a fit of rage over Medusa’s audacious claim that her beauty surpassed even that of Athena, the goddess enacted a harsh punishment.
As a means of avenging her own beauty, Athena transformed Medusa into a terrifying Gorgon. The once-lustrous hair that had drawn admiration from many was replaced by a writhing mass of venomous snakes, and her enchanting gaze became a deadly curse, capable of turning any onlooker into stone.
This transformation represented more than mere physical change. It marked Medusa’s tragic descent from a beautiful maiden to a powerful, yet cursed, figure in the annals of myth.
Perseus: The Slayer of Medusa

Initially hospitable, the Cyclops soon revealed his predatory nature, capturing Odysseus and his crew, intending to devour them one by one. Undaunted, Odysseus concocted a clever ruse.
He introduced himself as “Nobody” and offered Polyphemus a rich gift of wine. The Cyclops, Polyphemus, then proclaimed that he would eat Odysseus last — a fleeting mercy in a landscape of doom.
Seizing the moment, Odysseus and his men fashioned a sharp stake from a sturdy olive tree, and as the Cyclops succumbed to sleep, they drove it mercilessly into his single, glaring eye. Blinded and howling in agony, Polyphemus awoke to chaos.
In the end, even though the Cyclops was filled with rage, he could only curse Odysseus, calling upon his father Poseidon to exact revenge.
Thus, Odysseus’s triumph reverberated with dire consequences. The wrath of Poseidon unleashed itself, casting tempests upon the seas and leading Odysseus through further labyrinths of despair.
His triumph over the Cyclops marked not just an act of heroism but sparked the fury of a god, intertwining fate and vengeance as Odysseus navigated the tumultuous tides back to his beloved Ithaca.

My personal favorite story among these four has to be Hercules; the graphic portrayal of his twelve labors is not just a retelling but a riveting adventure that pulls the reader in. The illustrations are stunning, making the epic journey feel as though it’s unfolding in real-time, inviting young-at-heart readers to experience the thrill alongside the hero.
The Medusa graphic novel included in Greek Myths & Legends presents some intriguing variations from the classic myth, but perhaps the most striking element is Medusa’s unforgettable appearance. Who could possibly forget that ugly face?
While I found the Minotaur’s story richly illustrated with striking scenes that weave suspense and majesty together, the Cyclops tale did not resonate as strongly with me. The illustrations fell flat in comparison, and the look of Odysseus lacked the charm. He deserved to look much better in my opinion.
Overall, I would rate “Greek Myths & Legends” a solid 6.5 out of 10. While it may not stand among the classics, it is a refreshing journey through mythology that I wish I could have explored in my own childhood.
