I want to be candid: “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” boasts an abundance of stunning artwork that truly captivates the eye. However, at the heart of the story lies Delilah Dirk, our daring female protagonist, whose character development leaves something to be desired in terms of consistency.
However, I also believe “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” is a refreshing graphic novel that many readers are bound to enjoy, especially once they get a taste of the incredible artwork. Any critique is really just a part of the conversation.
The blend of adventurous storytelling and striking visuals creates an exhilarating journey that pulls you in. This is a work that not only tells a story but also invites readers to explore a vividly rendered world brimming with excitement and charm.

As a male reader, I found myself drawing parallels between Delilah and iconic characters such as Indiana Jones, Batman, and Superman — figures renowned for their charisma, depth, and timeless sense of adventure.
These heroes epitomize qualities that many aspire to emulate, yet Delilah appears to fall short of this ideal. Throughout my reading experience, I was left pondering: Who, exactly, is Delilah Dirk? What young girl would genuinely look up to this heroine?
While her adventurous spirit is undeniable, her personality comes across as somewhat flawed. Perhaps this was a deliberate choice, but I can’t help but feel that a more relatable and likable version of Delilah could have significantly enhanced the series. An engaging balance between her adventurous traits and a more resonant character depth might have created a heroine worthy of admiration and aspiration.
This probably comes across as a huge critique of the main female character, especially given that this is the third installment in the Delilah Dirk series. A closer examination of the earlier books — “Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant” and “Delilah Dirk and the King’s Shilling” — might illuminate her motivations and character growth. I’ll have to read the two earlier books in the series to see if they deepen my enthusiasm for Delilah Dirk.
Creating a compelling character requires clear reasons for the audience to connect with her. What makes her relatable or likable should resonate deeply, yet these qualities often feel hard to pinpoint in this third book. If you’re looking for an adventurous escape, “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” is a graphic novel that promises vibrant illustrations and daring escapades. The artwork is really good. I’m giving it an impressive 8 out of 10 for its dynamic visuals that bring the story to life. However, I did find the storyline itself a bit lacking — while it has its moments, it ultimately fell a bit short, leading me to rate it a 6 out of 10.
As a result, I would confidently rate “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” a commendable 7 out of 10.
Although the ending left me somewhat perplexed — perhaps it could have been executed more effectively — I still regard the book as a remarkable achievement!

Based on the glowing reviews on Amazon, one might be tempted to believe that the Delilah Dirk graphic novels are among the finest works ever crafted. While there’s certainly plenty of merit to the artistry, I can’t help but feel that “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” had a lot more potential to be spectacular with just a few adjustments.
On a final note: the story of “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” could also have benefited from a name change. In my view, a more fitting title would have been “Delilah Dirk and the Lost City of Atlantis,” as it aligns better with the overarching themes and adventures within the book. I suspect many readers who have delved into the story would share this perspective.

Delilah Dirk: Strong Female Characters in Graphic Novels
Delilah Dirk is a courageous female adventurer who truly captures the essence of swashbuckling excitement — a refreshing rarity in the realm of graphic novels! Young readers, particularly girls, might also enjoy titles like “Persephone,” “XENA: Warrior Princess (Classic Years Omnibus),” and the “Oh My Gods!” series.
While these graphic novels each offer unique experiences and feature very different female protagonists than Delilah Dirk, they still resonate with themes of adventure, strength, and resilience.
If you’re eager to dive into Delilah’s world, it’s probably best to start with her debut in “Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant.” Interestingly, Walt Disney Pictures even announced a live-action adaptation of this graphic novel in 2016.
However, as of late 2019, there haven’t been any updates regarding the project’s progress. Who knows — Delilah Dirk may one day leap off the pages and onto the big screen!
