So, why do I consider Port Noarlunga to be the ultimate beach destination in Adelaide? It has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and I’ve been to many of them. Once you’ve experience this amazing beach, you’ll know exactly why.

The reason is rather simple, I often find myself getting caught up in its allure and failing to make it to my next destination — Port Willunga — because Port Noarlunga has a way of making you stay.

Let’s dive into the best of Port Noarlunga Beach with its top snorkelling experiences while uncovering its secrets.

In this ultimate guide, you’ll discover all you need to know to plan an unforgettable trip to this hidden gem paradise!

Port Noarlunga Beach Guide

With shallow reefs perfect for beginners and a stunning 400m-long main reef just a stone’s throw from the end of the jetty, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable adventure in Poseidon’s underwater realm.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, the beautiful waters and incredible marine life will leave you hooked.

Imagine yourself strolling along the iconic 300m-long jetty at Port Noarlunga beach, soaking up the sun and taking in the breathtaking views. But that’s just the beginning — this spot is a snorkeller’s paradise!.

So if you’re in Adelaide, you need to experience it for yourself. Port Noarlunga beach is the ultimate destination for anyone looking for a beach getaway with a difference!

You’re definitely going to want to check out the first shallow reef on the left side of the jetty — it’s hard to miss!

It’s super accessible, and if the tide is low enough, you can actually stroll right over to it. This spot is a favorite among snorkellers and paddle boarders, and for good reason!

Port Noarlunga Shallow Reef

As you stroll down the iconic Port Noarlunga jetty, the vibrant atmosphere is palpable. The jetty comes alive with a diverse cast of characters, each with their own unique adventure in mind.

Some take a leisurely walk to the end and back, soaking up the sun and the breathtaking views of the coastline.

Meanwhile, thrill-seekers and daredevils can’t resist the urge to take the plunge, launching themselves off the jetty into the beautiful waters below on a scorching hot day.

Anglers often line the jetty as well, their lines cast out into the sea, waiting for a bite from the abundant marine life. And for the more adventurous, the jetty’s end marks the gateway to an underwater world of discovery, where snorkellers can explore the vibrant colours and textures of the long reef.

But that’s not all — when the tide is just right and the waters are calm, the reef itself becomes a temporary narrow island, inviting the brave and curious to take a surreal stroll across its rocky expanse. To access this spot, you typically need to make a splash into the ocean, unless you have a paddle board or similar to get you there.

At the far end of the Port Noarlunga jetty, I stumbled upon a striking memorial plaque honoring a remarkable Greek soul named John Koutsoukos (28/10/58 — 10/5/23), as you can see in the photo above. According to the inscription, John had an unwavering passion for fishing off this very jetty. What’s even more incredible is that he’s now also claimed his place in the heavenly realm of the Greek Gods Paradise — casting his lines among the stars!

On a hot summer day, especially during the school holidays, the Port Noarlunga jetty becomes a lively place. It is filled with people enjoying the sunshine and beautiful views.

In this photo, taken with my zoom lens, you can see the bustling crowd at the far end of the jetty. Snorkellers are moving up and down the stairs, heading to and from the water below.

While the jetty boasts a convenient ramp that descends into the inviting waters below, many thrill-seekers prefer to take a leap of faith, diving and jumping in straight from the top for a refreshing plunge. It’s a scene that perfectly encapsulates the essence of summer fun!

By the way, you may find something a bit odd about the above picture. Can you guess what it is? hahaha

Check out the video below where thrill-seekers take the plunge off the Port Noarlunga jetty, diving into the deep blue beneath. The depth of the water makes it a safe jump. The main concern is to watch out for other people in the water, including snorkellers, swimmers and other water enthusiasts.

Heading out for a snorkel at Port Noarlunga usually means a casual stroll down the ramp to splash into the ocean. But check this out — my snorkelling adventure turned out to be something else entirely! It looks like I’m about to be gobbled up by a shark, but here’s the twist: I thought I’d lost my GoPro!

Turns out, it swivelled around after I had it hooked around my neck with a fishing line necklace. After I hit the water, I couldn’t see or feel it in front of me. After a moment of pure panic, I realized it was chilling behind my back. Trust me, you’ve never seen a snorkelling video like this one — it’s wild!

Snorkelling Port Noarlunga Reef

As you can see, the Port Noarlunga reef is just a few feet from the end of the jetty. Snorkellers are drawn to its waters, eagerly swimming along the reef in hopes of spotting vibrant fish and the diverse marine life that thrives beneath the surface.

Take a look at this pic I snapped of the vibrant coral and lush seaweed at the Port Noarlunga reef! While it may not rival the breathtaking beauty of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, this hidden gem is Adelaide’s very own underwater paradise, just waiting to be explored by adventurous snorkellers. Dive in and discover the wonders that lie beneath the surface!

Port Noarlunga: Fish Species to see when Snorkelling

Here’s a short video I took during a snorkelling trip at the base of the Port Noarlunga jetty ramp, featuring some brilliant aquarium fish vibes!

I captured this underwater moment in one of my other snorkelling videos. It is a school of mullet, if I’m not mistaken, gathering around one of the jetty’s pylons.

I managed to take a photo of a Fish Snorkelling ID Chart while visiting Port Noarlunga Beach, when I came across the EMS Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries group. Their motto: Safe & Supervised Snorkelling Tours.

They had set up a tent offering snorkelling gear to anyone eager to dive in and explore. Keep in mind, though, that they only make these appearances in Port Noarlunga on rare occasions. They offer snorkelling experiences at locations across South Australia.

While you may not see all the fish listed in a single snorkelling session, you might just get lucky and encounter a few fascinating fish species while snorkelling Port Noarlunga reef!

The water visibility at Port Noarlunga can fluctuate daily, just like the array of fish that swim through its vibrant depths. If you’re on the lookout to dive into some underwater adventures, you can go to the GO2DIVE dive shop at 88A Esplanade, Port Noarlunga! It is a PADI Dive Centre for everything in snorkelling and scuba diving.

I had this fun encounter with Steve Selbach, the mastermind behind GO2DIVE, when I was snapping photos of the fabulous scuba diver statue standing right outside.

As I was taking some photos, Steve spotted me and swaggered over, playfully asking, “You like my statue?” With a twinkle in his eye, he struck a pose, and talked about taking a picture. I thought, “Wow, how cool! He wants me to take his picture.” So, naturally, I snapped one. Just as I did, he exclaimed, “No, no, not me… you!”

He did take my photo too, but let’s just say his was a masterpiece compared to mine. He’s clearly a diving legend at Port Noarlunga, earning a spotlight in my “Port Noarlunga Beach & Snorkelling: Ultimate Guide” and even managing to enter the mythical realm of Greek Gods Paradise!

Seriously, the universe has a funny way of bringing cool people together, doesn’t it? So, whether you’re there for the gear or some statue shenanigans, GO2DIVE is definitely the go-to spot for snorkelling and scuba diving!

Port Noarlunga Reef

Imagine being able to tread on an underwater world, with the ocean’s secrets revealed at your feet. At Port Noarlunga reef, this surreal experience becomes a reality when the tide is relatively low, exposing the reef’s hidden treasures.

As you step out onto the reef’s surface, the normally submerged landscape stretches out before you like an alien terrain. But be sure to come prepared — the smooth surface of the reef requires caution, making a pair of thin, lightweight scuba shoes essential for a secure grip to avoid slipping over. However, many people do choose to go barefoot!

On a great day, you’ll be joined by a parade of fellow adventurers, all eager to explore the reef’s nooks and crannies, and uncover the marine life that calls this unique environment home. As you walk on the reef, the sound of waves gently lapping at the reef create a sense of excitement and discovery, making for an unforgettable experience.

One day, I was struck by the abundance of crabs scurrying across the reef, which hastily retreated into crevices as I approached.

The reef also served as a resting ground for various birds, with seagulls being the most common species to be seen.

Notably, I spotted a single Sooty Oystercatcher, a sleek and striking black shorebird that rivals the size of a crow in its impressive appearance. Its most distinctive features include a long, vibrant red bill, a bright red eye, and vibrant pinkish legs, making it a standout sight against the backdrop of the Port Noarlunga reef. I think it was the first time I had ever seen one.

Port Noarlunga Boardwalk

The breathtaking 1.1 km boardwalk in Port Noarlunga meanders along the edge of stunning cliffs to the tip of the bluff on its way to the picturesque Christies Beach. This leisurely 10-minute stroll on the expansive 3-meter-wide coastal boardwalk offers captivating views at every turn. You can see a glimpse of it from the jetty.

As you walk on the Port Noarlunga boardwalk, you’ll find yourself gazing down at the shimmering sandy beaches below, inhaling the refreshing ocean breeze, and marveling at the magnificent cliffs that rise majestically beside you. It’s a perfect escape into nature, where each step unfolds the beauty of the coast!

I even got to see a recent sand sculpture of a dragon between the boardwalk and the rugged cliffs. Its nose was rendered in a subtle, ashen hue, as if it had just breathed a fiery blast of air, leaving behind a smoldering trail of volcanic ash.

The impressive Cairn at Port Noarlunga was built to honor Captain Collet Barker. He’s a British military officer and explorer who landed in this area possibly around the mouth of the Onkaparinga River in 1831. This impressive 12 ft. tall cairn makes for a great photo opportunity and the views are awesome from this higher ground spot. Don’t miss it!

Leave your car behind and set off on a picturesque stroll toward the legendary Port Noarlunga jetty. Don’t forget to swing by DIVE2GO on your way — it’s a must-see, especially for a glimpse of the cheerful scuba diver statue. Who knows, you might even run into Steve while you’re at it!

As you walk down along the coastal pathway, you’ll eventually see some large chopstick-like sculptures. They can be seen on the Port Noarlunga Beach foreshore and are called the “Core Values Totem Poles,” a notable work of art in Port Noarlunga. I must admit, it’s not exactly to my taste, but at least it offers a unique perspective.

The silver plaque on the ground states: The Core Values Totem Poles celebrate the beautiful landscape of Port Noarlunga and create a unique sense of place. They reference the local environment by incorporating layers of coloured glass and ceramic sedimentary strata reminiscent of the surrounding cliffs that dramatically change throughout the day and glow with the setting sun.

In the vibrant mural below bearing the name “Agatha’s,” a vision of style and sophistication comes alive. A girl sporting sleek mirror sunglasses gazes out, her lenses reflecting the rugged beauty of the Port Noarlunga jetty — a mirrored reflection that blurs the line between reality and symmetry.
