Jason and the Argonauts: A Modern Graphic Greek Myth

Get ready to embark on an epic adventure, because the story of Jason and the Argonauts starts in an entertaining way!

The very first page has Jason, our Greek hero, introducing himself aboard the magnificent Argo ship, and hold onto your hats because the Argo has a voice of its own! That’s right — the legendary vessel informs readers that none other than the goddess Athena designed it, adding a whimsical twist to our tale.

Just wait until you see where this unexpected journey leads us! The epic saga of Jason and the Argonauts promises an exhilarating adventure. While this tale follows the traditional script, be ready for some great twists that are sure to entertain you.

Once upon a time, in a land of ancient myths and more drama than a family reunion, Jason was the son of a rightful king. But wait! His sneaky uncle Pelias had swiped the throne while doing his best impression of a villain in a B-movie. Oh, and he definitely wanted Jason out of the picture — like, off-the-stage-out!

Luckily for our hero, his clever mom was two steps ahead of Pelias. She whisked Jason off to the wise centaur Chiron, the ultimate tutor for heroes, who even told Jason to eat his vegetable because of their goodness.

Under Chiron’s watchful eye, Jason transformed from a mere lad into a budding hero, learning everything from epic fighting techniques to the importance of a balanced diet — nutrition is key, folks!

Jason even trained with Hercules, until that big guy left for his own legendary escapades. Then Jason’s mom came back, revealing the dastardly deeds of Uncle Pelias. After that, it was time for Jason to reclaim what was rightfully his.

As he embarked on his journey, fate threw him a curveball in the form of an old lady desperately needing a lift across a river. Being the gentleman hero that he was, Jason helped her out, only to lose a sandal in the process — oops! But here’s the amazing thing: this “old lady” was none other than Hera, the queen of the gods herself!

Impressed by his kindness, she pledged her assistance for the adventures ahead. With a knowing grin, she reminded him that her uncle had received a prophecy about someone with one shoe who would come for the throne. Talk about a showdown!

Pelias was shrewd and cunning, informing Jason that the throne could not simply be handed over to him. If he truly wanted it, he would need to prove himself worthy of kingship. To this end, Pelias devised a daunting challenge, confident that it would be beyond Jason’s reach: he tasked him with retrieving the legendary Golden Fleece!

Securing this precious treasure would grant Jason not only victory in his quest but also the kingdom he desired. However, the Golden Fleece was no ordinary prize as it lay guarded by a fearsome dragon. Undeterred by the seemingly insurmountable odds, Jason accepted the formidable challenge and set his sights on the distant land of Colchis.

To aid him on this perilous journey, he would sail aboard the Argo, a magnificent ship specifically crafted for such daring adventures. As Jason embarked on his quest, he encountered a host of formidable creatures, including the Harpies — winged monsters with the bodies of birds and the faces of women — who sought to thwart his progress at every turn. Each challenge he faced would test both his mettle and that of his brave crew.

During his adventures, Hera watches over him, dedicated to ensuring his success. She informs him that Medea will prove to be an invaluable ally for Jason.

In the film Jason and the Argonauts, one of the most captivating scenes unfolds when fierce warriors emerge from the earth after the dragon’s teeth are scattered. One rarely encounters the presence of Orpheus aboard the Argo in most retellings of the Jason and the Argonauts tale, despite him being one of the original Argonauts in Greek mythology.

In this delightful interpretation, we find Orpheus using his enchanting voice to combat the dreaded Sirens. Their malicious allure falters in the face of his melodies, as they can’t bear the sound of his singing and plead for him to go away. It turns out that sometimes, a truly “bad” song can turn the tide and save the day!

Recall that iconic moment in the 1963 film “Jason and the Argonauts,” when Jason unscrews the heel of Talos, causing the mighty bronze giant to topple over. Interestingly, in “Mythology Graphics: Jason and the Argonauts,” it’s Medea who takes on the role of the unscrewer, adding a captivating twist to the tale.

In “Mythology Graphics: Jason and the Argonauts,” Chapter 5 presents a fresh perspective on the tale: “Happily Ever After?” Jason returns triumphantly with the Golden Fleece, eager to reclaim his throne and marry Medea.

However, he soon discovers that the citizens are less than agreeable, rejecting the notion of a sorceress as their queen. Consequently, they force Jason and Medea into exile. Seeking refuge, they set sail on the Argo to find a new home.

Upon arriving in a neighboring kingdom, the king offers to assist Jason in reclaiming his lost kingdom, but there’s a catch — he must marry the king’s daughter.

Driven by his desire for power, Jason agrees. Unbeknownst to him, Medea overhears their conversation and is consumed by a fit of rage. In a dramatic display of her magic, she left soaring through the sky in a chariot drawn by dragons, leading many to speculate that she is seeking out Hera, the goddess of marriage, for guidance or vengeance.
