I personally took around three and a half hours, taking my time to soak in the breathtaking views, snap some incredible photos from the summit, and enjoy a few well-deserved rest stops along the way.
This hike to the Pinnacle has to be one of the best walks in the Grampians, if not the very best. Trust me, it deserves a spot on your must-do list. Along the way, you’ll pass some incredible sights, including the Grand Canyon, Silent Street, and — if luck’s on your side — a waterfall you can walk under. And once you reach the top? The views are nothing short of magical — panoramas of Halls Gap, the sweeping Grampians, and Lake Bellfield stretch out before you, offering epic scenes that rival those of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.
I’m so glad I embarked on this beautiful hike, and I bet you will be too — if you have the time and courage to take it on. Of course, you could skip the trek and simply drive to Baroka Lookout, which offers similar stunning vistas with very easy access for everyone. But honestly, the real adventure lies in the climb! When I arrived, I swear I was greeted by Apollo himself — I even snapped a photo to prove it (see below).

There’s also Sundial Carpark, which is said to be a bit easier, but honestly — how could anyone resist Wonderland? The name alone sounds straight out of a myth, more magical and mysterious than anything else in the Grampians. I told you I saw Apollo in Wonderland — just look closely at the vehicle on the left in the Wonderland carpark — it’s Apollo! It’s almost as if the Greek god knew I was going to be there. Truly an unforgettable moment that I’ll never forget!
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I arrived — the entire parking lot was completely packed! I had to get a bit creative and find a spot outside the designated white-lined spaces. You don’t need much to complete the Pinnacle walk — just enough water and a little preparation. I took along 3L, and drank most of it. As a general rule, plan for about 1L of water for every hour of hiking.

They don’t need to be specialized hiking boots, but comfortable footwear with good grip will make a big difference. But don’t worry — there’s a hidden gem along the way called the Cool Chamber, a surprising and refreshing oasis where you can unwind and recharge. Trust me, it’s a welcome relief amid the rugged beauty of your adventure.
A pivotal moment approaches, signaling a crossroads in my journey. A signpost reveals two paths leading to the Pinnacle: one a gentle 0.7 km trail, promising a quick 20-minute ascent, and the other a more challenging 2.2 km route, taking about 45 minutes. Without hesitation, I chose the easier option. To be honest, the longer trail was simply out of the question — tiredness had already taken hold, and my energy was low. Sometimes, the wisest choice is the simplest one, especially when fatigue clouds your resolve.

Just a few meters after leaving Silent Street, there’s a tiny turn to the left — super easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. Honestly, I totally missed the markers and kept going way past the junction. The further I went, the more I started to feel a bit uneasy. It started to feel pretty risky the deeper I went, and I had a feeling I’d missed my turn.
Luckily, the couple who took my photo at the waterfall showed up. I called out to them, told them I thought I’d missed the marker, and the guy quickly spotted it. That’s when I turned back.
The walk to the Pinnacle itself isn’t dangerous, but if you go off-route like I did, you could end up in some sketchy territory. So, just keep an eye out for those markers — missing them could get you into trouble. Stay alert and enjoy the hike!
The Pinnacle Summit and Lookout: Hiking Guide
Hiking up to the Pinnacle in the Grampians kind of feels like climbing Mount Olympus in Greece — it’s a pretty epic adventure, and you get a real sense of achievement when you’re close to the top.
In spring, the Pinnacle trail gets even more beautiful with all these vibrant wildflowers that splash some extra color into the amazing scenery. When I was there, the weather was all over the place. The clouds were racing across the sky so fast, it looked like they were having a race, making the whole scene pretty dramatic. It’s a hike that keeps you on your toes — challenging, crazy beautiful, and full of moments you won’t forget.

At the summit of a high peak, a fenced lookout known as the Pinnacle Lookout offers a breathtaking vantage point. Here, you can gaze directly ahead and take in the spectacular panoramic views stretching before you.
To the right, you’ll find a stunning view overlooking Lake Bellfield.
The couple who kindly guided me back onto the Pinnacle pathway took this Polaroid of me with my SX-70 camera. I initially captured a photo of them together at the Pinnacle Lookout and gifted it to them as a keepsake. As for my own picture, I had it taken at the summit of the Pinnacle, just slightly lower than the lookout, at the very edge of the cliff — a moment to remember with a great view behind me. I’m not sure why it was taken with so much sky in the shot, but it still looks pretty good to me.
Before I left, a lively group of young Asians arrived at the Pinnacle Lookout. The area was bustling with people coming and going, creating a constant flow of visitors eager to take in the stunning views.
After spending a considerable amount of time at the Pinnacle summit, I began my descent back to Wonderland Carpark. As I approached the vicinity of the carpark, I faced a decision. On my way back, I initially planned to retrace my steps along the same route. However, at the junction at the top of Grand Canyon, a sign pointed toward Wonderland Carpark.
Instead of turning right, which would have taken me down the Grand Canyon, I took the left turn, choosing the easier 400-meter path that led over the large, flat rocks back to the carpark. Here’s a photo I took just before arriving back at Wonderland Carpark.
Pinnacle Walk Tip: It was nowhere near the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, so my recommendation would be to go down the Grand Canyon route — the same way you walked up.
The next morning in Halls Gap, I captured this shot with my zoom camera to get a clearer, more detailed view of the Pinnacle Lookout from the heart of the town.
Tips for the Grampians Pinnacle Hike
When you’re doing the Grampians Pinnacle Hike, my biggest tips are to bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep you going. Don’t forget a hat and a jacket in case the weather decides to turn chilly. Start your adventure from Wonderland Carpark — that’s the best place to begin. Make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes because the trail can get pretty rocky.
On your way up, head straight to the Grand Canyon first. After you pass Silent Street when you are close to the top, keep an eye out for those little markers that tell you when to turn left — they’re only a few feet past the exit from Silent Street, so don’t miss them!
For the return trip, the most scenic route back to Wonderland is to go via the Grand Canyon again — it’s just as stunning on the way down. Give yourself around four hours to do the whole Pinnacle walk, though I’ve seen some people say they took up to five hours. I can see this being the case especially on really hot days. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend doing this hike in the peak heat since there’s barely any shade. Better to hit it up when the weather’s cooler and enjoy the incredible views!
