If you’re looking for a funny Effie Stephanides comic, you’re in the right place. Effie is Australia’s very own Greek goddess — and if you don’t know her yet, you’ve been missing out. Brought to life by Mary Coustas, Effie first made a name for herself on stage in Wogs Out of Work, which ran from 1987 to 1990 — and I was lucky enough to catch it. But Acropolis Now was what really launched her into orbit. The Australian sitcom ran for 63 episodes between 1989 and 1992.

In Acropolis Now, Nick played Jim Stefanidis — the cool Greek guy who ran the Acropolis Café with all the maturity of a 15-year-old. But it was often Effie, his loud, larger-than-life hairdresser cousin, who stole the show.
