If you’re on the hunt for a Greek mythology novel packed with mystery, adventure, romance, and jaw-dropping twists, look no further than The Immortal by Christopher Pike. The story feels like it’s straight from Mount Olympus — maybe inspired by a powerful Olympian goddess, one of the Muses, or even Apollo himself, the god of the sun and prophecy. Once you start reading, I guarantee you’ll be flipping pages faster than Hermes delivering a divine message.
From the very first chapter, I knew I was in for something extraordinary. The storytelling is top-notch — gripping, mysterious, and so well-crafted that it transports you straight into the heart of Greece, including the Greek islands of Mykonos and Delos, and beyond. Honestly, this is one of those rare books that keeps you guessing until the very last page. If you’re a fan of Greek mythology, romance, and adventure all rolled into one, this novel hits every mark — and then some.
Now, I have to say — Christopher Pike is a literary genius. Sure, he’s written plenty of other books, but The Immortal (1993) stands out as his only venture into Greek mythology, from what I know. And he makes it count. It’s so vividly detailed that you might start to believe the Greek gods are lurking just around the corner, whispering secrets of eternity. My mind was absolutely blown.
Plot-wise, it follows two best friends, Josie and Helen, who embark on a trip to Greece — specifically the enchanting island of Mykonos. They’re there with Josie’s dad and his trophy girlfriend, and let’s just say, the girls get some romantic surprises of their own that you won’t see coming. The real magic begins when they visit the neighboring island of Delos. This isn’t just any Greek island — it’s Apollo’s sacred land, the birthplace of the god himself. The story takes some wild, unexpected turns on Delos that I won’t spoil, but trust me, you’ll be on the edge of your seat with jaw-dropping surprises.
What makes The Immortal truly incredible isn’t just its mythological vibe and the stunning Greek setting — it’s also a story of romance, danger, and near-death experiences. Think lost at sea, divine intervention, and secret revelations from Olympus and the Underworld (yes, Heaven and Hell — like you’ve never heard before). Christopher Pike channels the voices of the Muses — or maybe even Apollo himself — with a level of detail and surrealism that’s truly out of this world.
And here’s a secret: a sci-fi twist is woven into the mythological tapestry, making the story even more mind-bending. It’s like Greek mythology collided with futuristic fantasy, creating something uniquely entertaining. Honestly, I have no idea how Pike pulled this off, but he did — and it’s absolutely incredible.
My rating? I’d give “The Immortal” a super cool 9 out of 10. Side note: I started reading it on a flight to the Paniyiri Greek Festival, held at the beautiful Musgrave Park in Brisbane’s South Bank in May 2026 — on its 50th anniversary! So, I somehow struck gold with this book too. That’s actually where I took the feature image for this review. After finishing the book a few days later, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apollo himself had handpicked it for me — like, “Remember the gods,” and I totally did.
It’s kinda wild, like my own short novel, Love on Oracle’s Isle. But seriously, The Immortal is way cooler and would make an incredible movie — like, it would be totally insane. Forget about making more movies about The Odyssey. This book has everything for a blockbuster: an epic story, divine secrets, romance, and adventure. Zeus himself would be impressed and eager to see it.
On November 25, 1996, Pike’s novel Fall Into Darkness was adapted into a TV movie with the same name, produced by his own company, Christopher Pike Productions. Interestingly, Wikipedia notes that in 2022, a filmmaker confirmed Netflix had actually optioned 28 of Pike’s books, which really shows how incredible his stories must be.
Here’s what the back cover of The Immortal says about the story to give you a better idea of what you’re in for.
To wrap it up, if you’re into a great blend of Greek mythology, adventure, mystery, sci-fi, and romance, then The Immortal (1993) by Christopher Pike is a book you definitely want to check out. It’s a must-read for Greek mythology fans — and I dare say, one of the best Greek mythology novels out there. Trust me, it’s a story that will stay with you long after you’ve finished — truly unforgettable!
