1. HERCULES Graphic Novel: Greek Myths & Legend
In the 4-in-1 Greek Myths & Legends graphic novel, the adventures of Hercules are brought to life with an electrifying blend of drama, artistry, and timeless heroism. Hercules, often viewed as the epitome of strength, faces a multitude of challenges that test not just his physical prowess but also his intellect and resolve.
Among his twelve legendary labors, three scenes stood out as particularly captivating to me: his confrontation with the Hydra, the defeat of the Stymphalian birds, and his crafty encounter with Atlas.
The Hydra, a serpent-like creature with multiple heads, embodies a unique challenge for Hercules. Each time he lops off one head, two more regrow in its place, demonstrating that brute force alone won’t win the day. What’s he going to do?
Hercule’s sixth labor involved the Stymphalian birds, fearsome creatures with metallic beaks and wings, who menace the local populace. Hercules, armed with a rattle gifted by Athena, draws them out of their hiding places, setting the stage for an exhilarating aerial battle.
The artfully detailed imagery captures the chaos of feathers and steel, with Hercules skillfully dispatching these scary adversaries, showcasing not just strength but agility and resourcefulness.
Finally, the tale of tricking Atlas reveals a clever side to Hercules’s character. Tasked with retrieving golden apples, Hercules gets assistance from the titan, Atlas. But Atlas would only agree on the condition that Hercules would hold up the sky temporarily while he fetched the treasures.
However, upon Atlas’s return, he unexpectedly tried to keep the burden on Hercules, who was reluctant to reclaim his celestial duty.
This moment of playful deception highlights a different kind of heroism — one that values wit over sheer strength. In a sharp twist, Hercules, feigning exasperation, suggests that he needs to adjust his grip for a moment. With this ruse, he cleverly maneuvers Atlas into relinquishing his hold on the sky. Instead of brute force, Hercules uses his cunning and strategic thinking to outsmart a being as formidable as the titan.
This encounter embodies the essence of heroic resourcefulness, reminding readers that true strength lies not only in muscles but in the ability to think critically in dire situations. Hercules’s triumph over Atlas not only showcases his physical feats but also his mental agility, allowing him to navigate the complexities of divine challenges with finesse.

2. MEDUSA Graphic Novel: Greek Myths & Legends
In the graphic novel “Greek Myths & Legends,” the story of Medusa unfolds as a gripping tale of beauty, jealousy, and fate. Once a stunningly beautiful maiden, Medusa caught the eye of Poseidon, the god of the sea.
Their forbidden romance ignited a tempest of emotions, especially when Medusa, in her hubris, claimed that her beauty surpassed even that of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. This bold assertion infuriated Athena, leading to dire consequences.
However, the narrative in this graphic novel has a big twist in it, as you can see.
The typical Greek myth unfolds more like this. In a fit of rage over Medusa’s audacious claim that her beauty surpassed even that of Athena, the goddess enacted a harsh punishment.
As a means of avenging her own beauty, Athena transformed Medusa into a terrifying Gorgon. The once-lustrous hair that had drawn admiration from many was replaced by a writhing mass of venomous snakes, and her enchanting gaze became a deadly curse, capable of turning any onlooker into stone.
This transformation represented more than mere physical change. It marked Medusa’s tragic descent from a beautiful maiden to a powerful, yet cursed, figure in the annals of myth.
Perseus: The Slayer of Medusa
Entangled in this ancient Greek tragedy, Perseus emerges as a reluctant hero tasked with slaying Medusa. King Polydectes, enamored with Perseus’s mother Danaë, sends the young hero on what seems like an impossible quest to eliminate Medusa and return with her head as proof.
Armed with divine gifts from the gods, including a reflective shield from Athena and winged sandals from Hermes, Perseus embarks on a perilous journey. Hermes guides him, providing wisdom and direction as he navigates the land of the Gorgons.
Upon successfully beheading Medusa, Perseus’s journey takes an unexpected turn. On his way home, he uncovers a dramatic scene: Andromeda, a beautiful princess, is chained to a cliff, awaiting a dreadful sea monster that threatens to destroy her.
Captivated by her plight and her beauty — Perseus decides to rescue her, setting the stage for yet another adventurous scene in the “Greek Myths & Legends” graphic novel.
This intertwining of Medusa’s tragic fate and Perseus’s heroic endeavors creates a rich tapestry of myth, illustrating the complex interplay of beauty, vengeance, and destiny in ancient Greek lore.

3. CYCLOPS Graphic Novel: Greek Myths & Legends
Odysseus, the cunning hero of Homer’s epic, found himself ensnared on a perilous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
Among his many trials, one of the most terrifying encounters was with Polyphemus, a fearsome Cyclops and son of Poseidon, god of the sea. Seeking shelter, Odysseus and his men unwittingly stumbled into the monster’s lair, an ominous cave draped in shadows. Initially hospitable, the Cyclops soon revealed his predatory nature, capturing Odysseus and his crew, intending to devour them one by one. Undaunted, Odysseus concocted a clever ruse.
He introduced himself as “Nobody” and offered Polyphemus a rich gift of wine. The Cyclops, Polyphemus, then proclaimed that he would eat Odysseus last — a fleeting mercy in a landscape of doom.
Seizing the moment, Odysseus and his men fashioned a sharp stake from a sturdy olive tree, and as the Cyclops succumbed to sleep, they drove it mercilessly into his single, glaring eye. Blinded and howling in agony, Polyphemus awoke to chaos.
In the end, even though the Cyclops was filled with rage, he could only curse Odysseus, calling upon his father Poseidon to exact revenge.
Thus, Odysseus’s triumph reverberated with dire consequences. The wrath of Poseidon unleashed itself, casting tempests upon the seas and leading Odysseus through further labyrinths of despair.
His triumph over the Cyclops marked not just an act of heroism but sparked the fury of a god, intertwining fate and vengeance as Odysseus navigated the tumultuous tides back to his beloved Ithaca.

4. MINOTAUR Graphic Novel: Greek Myths & Legends
In the shadows of ancient Greece, the myth of Theseus unfolds like a dramatic tapestry woven with threads of valor and heartache. Born from the noble lineage of Aegeus, king of Athens, Theseus was destined for greatness, his arrival heralded by omens that whispered of his future exploits.
As a young man, he was drawn to the call of adventure, a pull stronger than any earthly bonds. When the blood-curdling legend of the Minotaur reached Athens, the citizens lived in dread, forced to send tributes of youth to the labyrinthine depths of Crete.
Among the chosen sacrifices, Theseus stood tall, driven not only by duty but by an unquenchable thirst for glory. Together, the trembling youths gathered, hearts heavy with fear, yet somewhere amid whispered prayers to the gods — especially to Athena, patron of heroes — there flickered a sliver of hope.
Upon his arrival in Crete, Theseus found not just a beast, but a monster of despair coiling within the labyrinth’s dark embrace. Armed with courage and a golden thread gifted by the enigmatic Ariadne — daughter of King Minos — he traversed the so-called inescapable maze, each step echoing with determination.
In a fierce, breathtaking clash of wills, Theseus vanquished the Minotaur.
Exultant yet haunted, he fled with Ariadne, whose heart shone brighter than the finest treasures of the realm. Yet as destiny wove its intricate patterns, he abandoned her on the shores of Naxos, caught in the tides of ambition and seeking his own legacy.
Thus, the tale of Theseus spiraled into myth — a hero born of blood and courage, marked by bittersweet choices that etched his name into Greek myth.

Four Greek Mythology Adventures in One Graphic Novel: An Overview
“Greek Myths & Legends,” created by Gilly Cameron Cooper and Nick Saunders is a rare 4-in-1 graphic novel, serves as an enthralling introduction to the vibrant world of Greek mythology for young readers embarking on their journey through these classic tales.
Bursting with stunning artwork, each page is filled with color and creativity, designed to capture the imaginations of readers and spark their curiosity. This graphic novel not only brings ancient stories to life but also invites everyone to explore the enchanting heroes, daring quests, and timeless lessons that have shaped our understanding of myths.
Within these pages, four iconic Greek myths spring to life: the legendary feats of Hercules, the chilling story of Medusa, the fearsome Cyclops, and the fearsome Minotaur. Each of these four Greek myths are reimagined with an artistic flair that transforms familiar narratives into something very fresh and exhilarating.
My personal favorite story among these four has to be Hercules; the graphic portrayal of his twelve labors is not just a retelling but a riveting adventure that pulls the reader in. The illustrations are stunning, making the epic journey feel as though it’s unfolding in real-time, inviting young-at-heart readers to experience the thrill alongside the hero.
The Medusa graphic novel included in Greek Myths & Legends presents some intriguing variations from the classic myth, but perhaps the most striking element is Medusa’s unforgettable appearance. Who could possibly forget that ugly face?
While I found the Minotaur’s story richly illustrated with striking scenes that weave suspense and majesty together, the Cyclops tale did not resonate as strongly with me. The illustrations fell flat in comparison, and the look of Odysseus lacked the charm. He deserved to look much better in my opinion.
Overall, I would rate “Greek Myths & Legends” a solid 6.5 out of 10. While it may not stand among the classics, it is a refreshing journey through mythology that I wish I could have explored in my own childhood.
