ANTIPODES Cocktail Party Review: The Exclusive VIP Experience

Antipodes Cocktail Party

Experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Melbourne’s Antipodes Greek Festival for the first time led me to attend the exclusive Antipodes Cocktail Party.

As Saturday night beckoned, I stepped into a world of flavor and festivity at the VIP cocktail party, elegantly hosted on the mezzanine level of the Greek Centre. This was no ordinary gathering; it was an experience that promised an evening of exquisite cocktails, interesting company, and a taste of Greece like no other.

Excited to enhance my experience at the Antipodes Festival, I purchased my ticket for the Antipodes Cocktail Party well in advance. Held annually in late February, the Antipodes Greek Festival offers a great glimpse into Greek culture and community, and I couldn’t wait to immerse myself in the festivities and food tasting.

Curious to see if the cocktail party would live up to its VIP reputation and justify the hefty ticket price, I couldn’t help but wonder: was it truly worth it? Just a heads-up — this exclusive VIP cocktail party doesn’t come cheap. I spent $120 on my ticket to attend the Antipodes Cocktail Party, and if you were bringing a partner, you’d need to double that amount. So, yes, you definitely want it to be great! I’m sure all the guests were hoping for a memorable night out, just as I was.

The cocktail party, hosted by the Melbourne Greek community, ran from 6 PM to 11 PM, and we were given blue bracelets that allowed us to move freely in and out of the venue — an excellent touch that added to the evening’s flexibility.

From Lonsdale Street, you can admire the stunning balcony of the Greek Centre, where the mezzanine level is located. I learned that the marble decor surrounding the balcony was inspired by the Parthenon. The white marble pieces were shipped from Athens, Greece — a fascinating detail shared during a speech on the main stage!

Looking back on my evening at the Antipodes Cocktail Party, I’ve got to say — it was quite the experience!

There were definitely some highlights, a couple of not-so-great moments, and a few ideas I think could take this exclusive VIP cocktail party to the next level.

So, did the Antipodes Cocktail Party live up to the hype? Was it the magical night I was dreaming of? Stay tuned and let’s dive in!

Antipodes Cocktail Party Review

To get into the Antipodes Cocktail Party, just hop in the elevator. There’s always a friendly staff member ready to check your ticket or bracelet — if you got it in the mail on time.

This cocktail party has limited spots available, but from what I could see, the crowd in the room was not overly packed. I reached out to a super nice staffer from the Greek Community of Melbourne to get the lowdown, and she mentioned that most guests arrive between 6 and 7 PM.

When it comes to dinner: many guests eat before arriving, but if you want, you can step out to grab a bite. Just keep in mind, though — you can’t bring your food back into the party.

When I first envisioned the Antipodes Cocktail Party, I had imagined a grand, expansive venue. However, I was surprised to find myself in a cozy, intimate room with not too many people inside.

When I arrived at about 6:45 PM, another surprise awaited me: rather than a formal welcome, the lift doors opened to reveal an inviting atmosphere that seemed to beckon me directly to the bar for a refreshing drink. While a friendly host could have enhanced the experience even further, their absence was merely a minor detail in what turned out to be a memorable evening.

Antipodes Cocktail Party VIP Guests

The Antipodes Cocktail Party held at the Greek Centre on the Mezzanine Level was an inviting space, highlighted by a sleek main bar that spanned much of one wall, close to another smaller bar table tucked into a corner.

A striking giant screen showcased the vibrant energy of the main stage, creating an engaging atmosphere. However, what struck me most upon entering the venue was the stark absence of Greek-themed decorations. This missed opportunity to infuse the cocktail party with a genuine Greek vibe left the space feeling somewhat incomplete.

Imagine how much more enchanting the evening could have been with the addition of symbols of Hellenic culture — perhaps a stunning statue of Apollo gracing the room, or captivating prints of Greece’s iconic landscapes adorning the walls. Vibrant blue and white streamers could have cascaded elegantly throughout the venue, echoing the colors of the Greek flag and inviting guests to immerse themselves in the experience.

With just a few thoughtful touches, the Antipodes Cocktail Party could have transformed into a festive homage to Greek heritage, creating a truly unforgettable celebration.

The Antipodes Cocktail Party bar most certainly has your taste buds covered. Whether you’re craving unique concoctions you’ve never tried, classic Greek flavors, fine wines, or some cool mixes, there’s something for everyone. The staff are super friendly and helpful in assisting you to find the perfect drink. And the best part? Every drink is covered by your ticket!

The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as drinks were served promptly, ensuring no thirst went unquenched. However, a tantalizing spread of food was noticeably absent. While attentive waiters gracefully wove through the crowd, offering tasty bites, the addition of a dedicated food table would have elevated the experience even further, inviting guests to indulge at their leisure.

Here’s a VIP couple (I’m guessing) waiting to get their drinks at the Antipodes Cocktail Party.

Antipodes Cocktail Party Balcony View: Mezzanine Level

I gotta say, I was a bit shocked not to spot Melbourne’s top Greek comedian Nick Giannopoulos at the Antipodes Cocktail Party. Just kidding — he was probably having a good time at the Antipodes Festival on Lonsdale Street somewhere! Actually, I didn’t spot any famous faces at the event.

The only notable person I noticed was the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) on the balcony, but that was about it. The only reason I noticed him was that, earlier, he gave a speech on the main stage outside on Lonsdale Street.

The Greek Centre’s Mezzanine Level room had two doorways that opened onto the balcony, giving you aa awesome view of Lonsdale Street and the main stage.

Seriously, the atmosphere was incredible! If you wanted to, you could catch all the excitement on the giant screen, but honestly, the best way to immerse yourself in the Greek festivities was simply to relax outside. It was the perfect spot to take it all in! When I visited, the temperature soared to 33 degrees during the day, making a refreshing drink with ice a top choice.

Check out this amazing view of the main stage from the balcony at the Antipodes Cocktail Party! Just a friendly reminder — this small area can get quite crowded as the night progresses.

While you’ll still get a glimpse of the main stage, seeing the performers may be a bit challenging. For the best views of the performers from the balcony, you can also watch the large screen on the left side of the main stage.

Antipodes Cocktail Party Food

Every now and then, the waiters would swoop in like snack ninjas, offering up some seriously delicious bites. Those cheesy delights? Pure heaven!

They also served up these cute little sesame seed buns, each stuffed with what seemed like a flavorful slice of lamb, which was quite tasty.

If you have a sweet tooth, you would have loved the tiny honey-drizzled baklava rolls that were being passed around, along with some enticing pieces of galaktoboureko. But you had to act quickly — I completely missed out when one girl swooped in and snatched up the entire platter, grabbing five or six of them! Sure, they were small, but what about the rest of us? Lesson learned: when it comes to delicious treats, you’ve got to be quick on your feet!

Antipodes Festival: Headline Artist

One of the coolest reasons to hit up the Antipodes Cocktail Party is catching the headline act live, and let me tell you, Rena Morfi absolutely knocked it out of the park! This fabulous Greek singer graced the stage in a stunning white outfit, then later switched it up to a striking red look — talk about style!

Her performance was fantastic, and I couldn’t help but think, wow, this gal’s got serious talent. Definitely a night to remember!

Lonsdale Street was buzzing with energy, teeming with a vibrant crowd. Feeling the electric atmosphere, I decided to go for a wander through the throngs of people, eager to soak it all in and catch a closer glimpse of the headline artist. She started her performance at 8:30 PM and promised to light up the night for a couple of hours.

I also wanted to check on what was happening at another stage on Lonsdale Street, the one in the direction of this picture.

As I approached the other stage on Lonsdale Street, I was pleasantly surprised to discover another captivating female vocalist taking the spotlight. It was the talented ensemble known as Dio Patrides, a group of young musicians poised to leave their mark.

Antipodes Cocktail Party: Dress Code and Tips

The dress code at the Antipodes Cocktail Festival was quite crazy. While many of the women were impeccably dressed, it seemed that the men largely missed the mark, even though some of them were possibly multi-millionaires.

Although the VIP Antipodes Exclusive Cocktail Party specified a “smart casual” dress code, as you’ll see in one of the pictures below, this guideline was clearly not upheld by all attendees.

In the photo below, one guy is rocking thongs! Seriously, WTF?! Is this some sort of VIP power move? Like, “Hey everyone, I’m so influential I can strut around in flip-flops!” Talk about defying dress codes!

So, picture this: the Friday before the cocktail party, I waltz into the Caras Greek Shop on 189 Lonsdale Street, located diagonally across from the Greek Centre, wearing my trusty sandals. I casually mention that I’m heading to the Antipodes Cocktail Party, and guess what? The Greek lady drops the bomb that she’s never been and will be working. Then she warns me that people are going to be all dressed up, and I should steer clear of sandals or sneakers.

But lo and behold, we have Mr. Thong gaining entry into the Antipodes Exclusive Cocktail Party lounge!

As my time at the Antipodes Cocktail Party drew to a close and I found myself waiting by the elevator, a scene straight out of a comedy unfolded before me. Suddenly, a waiter transformed a whole innocent tray of glassware into a breathtaking cascade of shattering chaos. The symphony of clinking turned into a thunderous crash that instantly silenced the room.

Just as we collectively held our breaths, someone broke the tension with a triumphant “Opa!

Honestly, it was the kind of exit that would make you think they had planned it for dramatic effect! What a truly unforgettable way to bid farewell to the Antipodes Cocktail Party — a blend of shattered glass and a top VIP experience!
