I’ve experienced a fantastic five-night adventure, splitting my time between three nights in Halls Gap and two in Mount Gambier. The fastest route takes you through Tailem Bend, past Bordertown (on the border between South Australia and Victoria), and then directly into Halls Gap. Covering approximately 500 km from Adelaide, expect around six hours on the road — plenty of time to channel your inner Mad Max as you cruise along the Australian highways, surrounded by stunning bush scenery.

I’d recommend spending three nights in Halls Gap. That way, you’ve got enough time to tick off the best spots in the Grampians. One must-visit is The Balconies — a jaw-dropping lookout just a short, easy walk from Reed Lookout. Trust me, the view from there is worth every step. I’m so glad I got to share this epic Adelaide road trip with my mum and create some unforgettable memories. We checked out some incredible spots in the Grampians National Park, like MacKenzie Falls and the Venus Baths — named after the goddess of love, Aphrodite (or Venus, if you’re Roman).

Best Adelaide Road Trip: Mount Gambier
Driving from Halls Gap to Mount Gambier is about 221 km, so you’re looking at roughly 2 and a half hours if you go straight there. But honestly, I’d totally suggest making a quick stop in Hamilton for lunch. The Hamilton Botanic Gardens are a hidden gem and perfect for a little stroll. We did just that, and I have to say, the drive from Halls Gap to Hamilton was hands down the most stunning drive section of the whole trip — the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, with views that will blow you away!
Once you get to Mount Gambier, you’ll find some amazing attractions, and the highlight is definitely the Blue Lake. It’s famous for turning this vibrant, almost surreal shade of blue from November to March. I was a bit worried we’d miss it in its prime since we went in mid/late November, but luck was on our side — we caught it in full, brilliant blue. We even saw it change shades throughout the day, which was pretty incredible. So, definitely plan to visit the Blue Lake multiple times if you can — it’s one of those sights that keeps surprising you!
Mount Gambier is also home to some fascinating sinkholes worth exploring. One of the highlights is Umpherston Sinkhole, where you can feed cute-looking possums at dusk and night, when they come out to play. That’s exactly what I did, and it was such a memorable experience!
While you’re in Mount Gambier, don’t miss out on checking out the Little Blue Lake. In summer, it’s a popular spot for a swim, but when we visited, it was way too chilly for that! Believe it or not, I actually saw some brave swimmers in their bathers heading back to their cars that day. There’s a conveniently located car park right next to the lake, so getting there is super easy.
The Little Blue Lake is about 16 km from the main Blue Lake, so even though they share a similar name, they’re not exactly right next door — but both are definitely worth a visit!
While you’re visiting the Little Blue Lake, you might as well continue your drive to Port Macdonnell, the closest coastal town to Mount Gambier, and I must say, quite quaint. There’s a nice jetty for a walk, plus a few interesting sights, like an old German mine that washed ashore there back in October 1943. How it got there is still a mystery…
The Tantanoola Caves are a must-see, just about 30 km from Mount Gambier, nestled between Mount Gambier and Millicent. You’ll come across them on your way to Beachport, right before you hit the stunning coastal town of Robe.
Tours run roughly every hour, so if you’re lucky, you can squeeze in a quick visit and be out in less than an hour. The cave system isn’t huge and it felt a bit like a tourist trap, but honestly, the stalactites are pretty mind-blowing — definitely worth a quick stop if you’re into cool underground scenery!
Epic Adelaide Road Trip Guide: Best Beach Towns & Coastal Destinations

There were boats docked on the other side of the jetty, and it just felt like the perfect spot to kick back, relax, and enjoy some fish and chips.
Robe is just a short drive away, but man, it’s where the coast really shows off its true beauty. Honestly, my first thought was, “I gotta come back here in peak summer on a hot day.” Even though it’s about three and a half hours from Adelaide, this place totally deserves the trip.
Believe it or not, back in Halls Gap, we were chatting with a young couple by the fire pit one evening, while we were all roasting marshmallows on sticks. They were from Melbourne and planning a quick getaway to Robe after hearing all the hype. They wanted to see it for themselves, and I couldn’t agree more — Robe is absolutely incredible!
Make sure you don’t miss the Robe Obelisk while you’re there — it’s a cool piece of history and adds a bit of charm to the town’s scenic vibe. Definitely worth a quick stop!
