PANTHEON Comic Series Review: Michael Chiklis as Zeus

Pantheon 1 Comic Michael Chiklis

So, Michael Chiklis as Zeus? Yeah, that’s actually happening in this awesome comic series called PANTHEON, and trust me, it’s totally worth a look. It’s a five-issue run from 2010, and if you’re not already familiar, Michael Chiklis is the actor who crushed it as tough cop Vic Mackey on FX’s The Shield — that gritty, no-nonsense detective you couldn’t help but root for. But here’s the wild part: in this IDW Pantheon comic, he’s stepping into Greek mythology, and somehow, he’s taking on the role of Zeus himself.

Now, you might be wondering, what’s Chiklis doing in a comic about Greek gods and ancient myth? Well, you gotta read the series to find out — no spoilers here. I’ll just say, this Pantheon comic review has just enough intrigue to make you want to check out all five issues of the series.

Fun fact: Michael Chiklis has been a comic fan for ages, and he’s got Greek American roots on his dad’s side — plus Greek/Irish from his mother’s side. It’s also clear that he has a genuine passion for Greek mythology, and that passion shines through in this Pantheon comic series. Casting himself as Zeus? That’s pretty bold. Who knows what it really means, but it definitely adds some extra mystery when reading these comics.

Michael Chiklis’s Pantheon started a little weird for me, but things quickly got better. The story’s pretty unique and surprisingly fun — definitely way more enjoyable than your average Greek mythology adaptation or retelling. I won’t give too much away, so you’ll need to use your imagination to follow along. The plot twists and turns are pretty unpredictable, so even if you think you’ve got it figured out, don’t be so sure.

If you’re curious, I say go ahead and give Michael Chiklis’s Pantheon comic series a try. It’s an exciting, unpredictable ride, and who knows — you might even start to believe that Michael Chiklis really is Zeus.

Pantheon Comic Review: Created by Michael Chiklis

I’ll say this about Pantheon: it’s a much stronger series than the Eternus comic, which centers around Medusa. While Eternus didn’t leave much of an impression on me and felt largely forgettable, Pantheon stands out with its unique, modern take on Zeus and the mythological universe.

Admittedly, it’s not without flaws — much of the dialogue can feel awkward, as if the characters are speaking words no one would realistically say. These moments can be distracting, but they don’t overshadow the overall strength of the story. What truly elevates Pantheon is Michael Chiklis’s portrayal of Zeus — an inspired casting choice that brings depth and gritty realism to the mythic king of gods.

Created by Michael Chiklis, along with Anny Simon Beck and Marc Andreyko, the five-issue Pantheon comic series offers a compelling mix of myth, contemporary politics, and cool character dynamics. Overall, I’d give it an 8 out of 10. It’s an interesting, thrill-filled ride packed with intrigue, mystery, and action. I genuinely enjoyed it, and I believe fans of Greek mythology set in modern times will find it well worth their while.

There was even buzz at one point that Michael Chiklis was in the process of transforming the Pantheon comic series into an epic TV show. Although that project never took off, just imagine how incredible it could have been! Who doesn’t want another top-tier Greek mythology TV series? The 2024 KAOS TV series, starring Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, immediately comes to mind — an absolute thrill for fans of the Olympian gods. There is also the enjoyable Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV Series. Had the Pantheon TV series come to life, perhaps Chiklis would have taken on the role of Zeus himself. Ah, well — at least we’re lucky to have the Pantheon comics to fuel our mythological adventures!
