Here’s a special photo I snapped of my mum on Christmas Day 2024, with the famous Glenelg jetty in the background. I love this part of Glenelg Beach — there’s a nice lawn area where you can kick back and relax without even having to step on the sand. Such a chill spot!

Walking around Glenelg is a fun, free activity that allows you to take in the relaxed beach vibe. And if you’re looking to unwind in style, check out the Moseley Beach Club during summer — a chic spot right next to the jetty where you can enjoy comfortable lounge seating, great sea views, good food, and refreshing drinks right by the water.

Whether you’re here for the sunbathing, exploring, or just soaking in the lively seaside atmosphere, Glenelg Beach is a South Australian gem that promises unforgettable memories.

Glenelg Beach Guide: Best Things to Do in Glenelg

Nestled right in the middle of Glenelg, Moseley Square is the heart of the action, perfectly positioned between Jetty Road and Glenelg jetty. Surrounded by beautiful palm trees and crowned with a charming fountain, it’s like a little slice of paradise on a sunny day. On one corner, you’ve got the Stamford Grand Adelaide Hotel, and on the other, the Bay Discovery Museum along with the Visitor Information Centre. Whether you’re in need of a quick coffee or a refreshing beer, Moseley Square’s got you covered.

If you’re taking the tram from Adelaide city to Glenelg, you’ll likely want to disembark right here at Moseley Square, since it’s the last stop and it’s the closest to the beach.

Pioneer Memorial in Glenelg

The Pioneer Memorial in Glenelg is a pretty awesome tribute that really captures South Australia’s adventurous spirit. Sitting just before the jetty entrance, this spot is a must-see. Erected in 1936 to mark the centenary of South Australia’s founding and honour the first European settlers, the towering 12.9-meter-high monument is topped with a striking sculpture of HMS Buffalo — the ship that brought South Australia’s first Governor, John Hindmarsh, to these shores.

And here’s the coolest part: this memorial also plays a role in my Jason and the Argonauts Movie Myth Tribute!

Glenelg Ferris Wheel

Positioned right between the Pioneer Memorial and Glenelg Jetty, you’ll spot the Glenelg Ferris Wheel. The Skyline Ferris Wheel has been a summer favorite for a few years now, appearing each season for several months. Standing at 35 metres, it’s actually the tallest portable Ferris wheel of its kind in Australia.

With 24 gondolas that can each hold up to six people, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy stunning views of the coast and Glenelg while having some fun.

Next to the Ferris Wheel, I have noticed a bench adorned with a memorial plaque dedicated to Dimitri Calantzis (1960–2010). He’s quite an enigmatic figure — a Greek man whose story I haven’t been able to uncover online. I find myself curious about who he truly was. The plaque simply describes him as a true hero, someone who loved surfing and inspired many.

Perhaps he was part of the Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club? His story feels like one waiting to be told.

Glenelg Beach

The highlight of Glenelg is undoubtedly its stunning beach during the summer months. Honestly, you simply must visit Glenelg in summer — it’s comparable to the Greek islands. Experiencing it during the warm shoulder seasons is also worthwhile. But if swimming and enjoying the sun are your main priorities, then summer is unquestionably the best time to experience all that Glenelg has to offer.

Glenelg Jetty

Taking a walk along Glenelg Jetty is an absolute must, no matter the season — summer or winter, pretty much every day of the year, except when its stormy. You’ll see people of all ages out there, enjoying the vibe.

In summer, some young folks even jump off the jetty for a thrill, even though it’s technically against the rules and you risk a fine. But honestly, just strolling down the jetty with an ice cream or gelato in hand is one of the best things you can do in Glenelg — no question.

You never know what you might spot, from a pelican hanging out at the end, to a playful seal in the water, or even someone reeling in a stingray. The jetty is definitely a highlight of Glenelg, so make sure to give it the attention it deserves.

Glenelg’s Iconic Big Red Love Heart Photo Attraction

A giant red love heart is one of the top photo spots in Glenelg, attracting countless visitors eager to capture this iconic landmark. During summer afternoons, you’ll see people taking photos at the big heart with their friends or family in it almost nonstop.

Here’s a picture of the giant red love heart during winter, when the sea is rough, showcasing its charm in a different season.

Strolling along the beach might be peaceful, but nothing compares to the vibrant energy of Jetty Road, Glenelg’s bustling main street. During summer, the sidewalks teem with lively crowds, creating an electric atmosphere that’s impossible to ignore. Shops line both sides, vying for your attention with tempting gelato shops, stylish boutiques, a charming bookstore, and more — there’s truly something for everyone.

If you’re in Glenelg during summer, a boat trip like this could be a fantastic outing, so keep it in mind!

Glenelg North Beach

Glenelg North Beach offers a tranquil escape from the bustling energy of Glenelg’s more popular spots. If you’re seeking a peaceful retreat to relax and soak up the sun, this serene shoreline is perfect for you. To reach this idyllic haven, simply cross the Patawalonga mouth via the Patawalonga Causeway — a sturdy concrete barrage that serves as a convenient crossing for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Whether you’re looking to unwind in a quieter setting or enjoy a scenic stroll, Glenelg North Beach promises an escape to a less crowded beach.

Adephi Terrace, Glenelg

Hey there, Greek myth fans. You know, Delphi in Greece was where Apollo had his oracle, right? Well, down in Glenelg, right on Adelphi (A-Delphi) Terrace, there’s a little bit of that mystery still hanging around. Secrets quietly whisper in the shadows — something’s always just a little out of reach, waiting for those curious enough to find it. I wonder where the Oracle is?

Patawalonga Dolphin Trail

Running alongside Adelphi Terrace is the Patawalonga Dolphin Trail — a delightful adventure! Dolphins are pretty rare to spot, but I’ve been lucky enough to catch glimpses of them in the Patawalonga River numerous times, and it’s always a magical moment. Reaching this spot is a quick 10 minute walk from Moseley Square, making it super easy to explore.

Patawalonga Dolphin Trail Glenelg

Personally, I prefer the other side of the Patawalonga River, easily accessible from Glenelg North Beach — it’s an even better spot to try your luck at seeing these playful creatures. Dolphins can appear pretty much anywhere in the river, so keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready! Good luck on your dolphin-spotting adventure — who knows, you might just have a surprise encounter!

Adelaide Scuba, Glenelg

I just had to include a shot of the Adelaide Scuba Dive Centre in this Glenelg Beach Guide — the mural on their wall is absolutely stunning! It beautifully captures their inspiring philosophy: “And into the ocean I go to lose my mind and find my soul.” If you’re itching to explore Adelaide’s underwater world, this is the ultimate spot to dive in. Not only do they offer top diving experiences in Adelaide, but they also stock a fantastic selection of top-quality dive gear.

Partridge House, Glenelg

If you love wandering through stunning gardens, a visit to Partridge House in Glenelg is definitely worth it. The garden setting is also home to a charming fountain, making it even more special.

Partridge House Garden Water Fountain

The land at 38 Partridge Street was bought back in 1839 by Mrs. Elinor Varley, and by 1899, a beautiful home was built there. Architects English, Soward, and Jackson designed the house, originally featuring 18 rooms and some outhouses.

Charles Grant Varley lived in the house until January 1902, when Elinor sadly passed away. Soon after, the Thomas family — Mary (Maisie) Harriet and Evan Kyffin — moved in. From 1912 until 1973, the house was owned by pastoralist H. P. McLachlan and his sons. In 1973, Glenelg Council stepped in and bought the property to save it from being torn down.

Today, the City of Holdfast Bay rents out the house for community events and private functions. The gardens are open every day and feature the Townsend Drinking Fountain, a gift to the council from 1877.

Jimmy Melrose Memorial

This bronze head and shoulder bust of Jimmy Melrose, situated along Glenelg’s esplanade, was crafted by artist Ken Martin as a memorial to Charles James (Jimmy) Melrose (1913–1936).

Jimmy Melrose Memorial Glenelg

Raised at Glenelg’s Glenwood Mansions — now known as Melrose Apartments — Jimmy Melrose captured global admiration with his daring aviation achievements. In just three short years, he set numerous Australian flying records and even broke world records, demonstrating remarkable skill and courage.

Tragically, on 5 July 1936, at only 22 years old, Jimmy lost his life during a charter flight from Melbourne to Darwin when his Heston Phoenix disintegrated over South Melton, Victoria, amid turbulent conditions. His untimely death sent shock waves around the world. He was later mourned as a brave and noble “young knight of the air.”

Walk from Glenelg to Brightom Jetty

One of the coolest things to do in Glenelg is to take a walk over to Brighton Jetty. It’s an 8 km round trip, so make sure you have about 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the stroll. Once you get there, you can relax with a quick walk along Brighton Jetty or explore the main strip in Brighton, where you’ll find plenty of spots to grab a drink, some food, or even ice cream. If you’re after a more laid-back walk, you can stop at other spots along the way and turn back whenever you like.

For example, there’s a great café on the Glenelg South foreshore, about 1 km from Glenelg Jetty, perfect for a quick coffee break. You can also walk to the Somerton Surf Life Saving Club, which sits roughly halfway between Glenelg and Brighton.

The ideal time to take this walk is during the Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures event, typically held from late January to early February. During this period, you’ll have the chance to explore some truly fascinating sculptures. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to see many impressive pieces at the Brighton Sculptures event, including this memorable crystal ball sculpture.

A Whale on Glenelg Beach!

One afternoon at Glenelg, I couldn’t believe my eyes — honestly, I thought I was dreaming! There was this huge whale just lying on the sand at Glenelg Beach, like it had somehow washed up there overnight. And get this — there were scientists wandering around, pouring water on it as if that was going to save it. Some were even taking biopsies, which just made everything so chaotic and confusing.

It looked super real, but also kinda fake at the same time — like, I wasn’t sure if I was seeing things. I turned to someone standing next to me and asked, “Is it real?” They nodded and said yes, and then pointed out all the other people around, all acting like it was the real deal. Since it wasn’t April Fool’s Day, I started to really believe it might be genuine, and I was totally amazed! But, even in the back of my mind, I had a tiny doubt.

Turns out, I was totally fooled — because it was all staged! A group of environmentalists had secretly craned in a giant whale replica in the early morning hours, trying to raise awareness about how terrible the ocean pollution is with all the garbage trashing our seas. Wow, I couldn’t believe it when I found out the truth! Here’s a short video of the whale replica on Glenelg Beach from March 9 to 11, 2024 — you’ve got to see it!
